Salazar provides a 50:50 simultaneous bi-literacy model, in which students receive initial literacy and content area instruction in both program languages in grades kindergarten through sixth. The program is in its 9th year of implementation and includes approximately 230 students.  Instruction is provided by two educators, a TESOL endorsed teacher and a bilingual certified teacher. Collaboration and planning are critical to the success of our program; teachers have developed a comprehensive Curriculum Articulation Plan to ensure instructional practices are aligned in both languages.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratories Foundation- the LANL Foundation launched the Northern New Mexico Inquiry Science Education Consortium (ISEC) as a regional program to improve performance of high-need students. Salazar Elementary joined the consortium in 2010, offering a comprehensive inquiry centered science curriculum to students, grades K-6. Teachers receive on-going professional development and are provided coaching and training by our on-site Science Literacy Coach (SLC).
  • Communities in Schools-Salazar partners with CIS in offering wrap-around services to support students in their academics and well-being. Other services include food, clothing and tutoring.
  • Teamwork- focused collaboration among site and grade level teams; this time is intended for planning, goal setting and analyzing student work and the sharing of strategies.
